Superstition Mountain Wilderness
|
| Experience the natural splendor of the Superstition Mountain Wilderness, east of Apache Junction, Arizona; marvel at the breathtaking scenery as nature displays its awesome flora and wildlife. Trail ride back in time to a land rich in history - of cowboys, prospectors and ancient Indian cultures. See the abandoned ranches, mines, prospect holes, and ancient Indian cliff dwellings; let your imagination turn back the clock. The lure of gold has attracted folks to the Superstition Mountains for a long time, perhaps before the 18th century. Legend suggests that a Spanish family named Peralta came prospecting in the 1840s. The Peraltas struck it rich and worked several mines in the Superstition Mountains until they were mostly killed off by hostile Indians. Next on the scene was a German immigrant known as Jacob Waltz (the Dutchman). He also struck gold in the Superstition Mountains and, at his death, left clues as to the whereabouts of his hidden treasure. Though many have searched and some have given their lives in the eternal quest, the lure of the Lost Dutchman's Gold continues today. A taste of the Superstition Mountain Wilderness awaits you on our all day trail rides and extended trips. Majestic mountain ranges and their hidden secrets are the destination of our rides; Brush Corral, Blacktop Mountain, Weaver's Needle, Needle Canyon, Marsh Valley, Angel Springs, and Reavis Ranch are just a few locations you can visit. Experience the legacy of the Superstition Mountain region; learn about the history, legends and lore, and take in the natural wonders...... |
Popular One and Two Night TripsThese one and two night trips are popular for customers who want service on their trip. In the evening you ride into First Water Ranch for dinner, campfire, and tent camping. Camp is isolated in a little valley, on the western Superstition Mountain Wilderness boundary. Camp supplies are brought in by 4x4 vehicles. This cuts out the cost of pack horses. It also allows us to have a better camp for you. Some of the wilderness trails used for these rides are the Dutchman Trail, the Black Mesa Trail, the Peralta Trail, and the Second Water Trail. First Water Ranch Trip:

For The ExperiencedThese rides are available for customers who want trips farther into the Superstition Mountain Wilderness. Some of the trailheads used can be an hour and a half drive away from the city. These rides are more challenging, typically camp and other destinations are remote. We offer a three day, full service trip to Reavis Ranch. Reavis Ranch is named after Elisha Reavis, the first Anglo to settle there during the 1870s. Reavis Ranch is in a high valley with Ponderosa Pine trees and Alligator Junipers. This horseback ride usually begins at the north east end of the Superstition Mountain Wilderness, at Reavis Ranch Trailhead, and ends at the south east end, at Woodbury Trailhead. One of the favorite excursions for the second day is Circle Stone, near the top of Mound Mountain, thought to be an ancient Indian calendar. Custom trips are available for those who want to rough it in areas that we do not offer full service trips. These trips are designed for small groups, traveling with light packs. Customers can submit a trip plan. The trip plan is arranged between the customers and OK Corral Stables. Typically these rides begin at the western Superstition Mountain Wilderness area and travel to the eastern areas, spending three days and camping at two locations. Note that no food or gear is supplied. You must be proficient in wilderness environments and responsible for most of your needs. Your guide is there for three things: to be a guide; to take care of the riding horses and pack horses; to give you a little history of the areas you ride in. Reavis Ranch Trip:
